About the BAH Calculator
This tool is built for a quick housing-budget check. Enter the monthly BAH amount you already know, then add rent, utilities, renters insurance, parking, pet rent, or other housing costs. The result shows how much of the allowance is being used and whether part of the bill may need to come from other income.
It can also compare a current and new BAH amount before a PCS move. The comparison is useful for planning, but it is not a replacement for an official rate lookup or guidance from a military finance office.
How the BAH Calculator Works
BAH means Basic Allowance for Housing. Eligible U.S. service members may receive it when government housing is not provided. Official amounts can vary by duty location, pay grade, dependent status, and effective year.
Start with the official monthly amount
The calculator does not download official BAH rates. Use the amount shown on an official source or pay record. The ZIP code, year, grade, and dependent fields are kept as planning details, while the monthly BAH field drives the calculation.
Compare BAH with the complete housing bill
Rent is only one part of a housing budget. Utilities, renters insurance, parking, pet fees, and other recurring charges can change the final picture. Adding those costs gives a more realistic monthly estimate than comparing BAH with rent alone.
Understand the result
- Annual BAH: the entered monthly amount multiplied by 12.
- Weekly and daily values: useful equivalents for personal budgeting.
- BAH leftover: the amount remaining when estimated housing costs stay below BAH.
- Out-of-pocket cost: the amount by which estimated housing costs exceed BAH.
- Percentage used: the share of monthly BAH going toward the entered housing costs.
Planning rent below BAH
Some households prefer to keep rent below the full allowance so there is room for utilities and other fees. The 80%, 90%, and 100% figures are budgeting reference points, not official affordability rules.
Using the PCS comparison
Enter both the current and new monthly BAH amounts to see the difference per month and per year. A higher allowance does not always mean a move will cost less, because rent, deposits, utilities, commuting, and local fees may also change.
With dependents and without dependents
Official rates are commonly listed separately for service members with dependents and without dependents. The correct status depends on military eligibility rules and the service member’s record. Confirm the applicable category with an official source.
Important limitation
This page is an educational planning tool. It does not provide official BAH rates, legal advice, tax advice, military-pay advice, or guaranteed benefit amounts. Verify current information through the Defense Travel Management Office, Military Pay, or the appropriate finance office before making a lease or relocation decision.
