Dose volume = known dose ÷ concentration
Syringe units = dose volume in mL × selected syringe factor
Estimated doses per vial = total vial amount ÷ known dose

A simple calculation example

Suppose a vial contains 5 mg and the known liquid volume is 2 mL. The concentration is 2.5 mg/mL. A clinician-provided value of 250 mcg equals 0.25 mg, so the calculated liquid volume is 0.1 mL. On a U-100 scale, 0.1 mL corresponds to 10 units.

Why mg, mcg, mL and units must not be mixed up

Milligrams and micrograms measure mass, while milliliters measure liquid volume. Syringe units are markings based on a particular syringe scale. One milligram equals 1,000 micrograms, so selecting the wrong mass unit changes the calculation by a factor of 1,000.

  • 1 mg = 1,000 mcg
  • 0.5 mg = 500 mcg
  • On a U-100 scale, 1 mL = 100 units
  • U-40, U-50 and U-100 scales are not interchangeable
